Community Blanket Exercise

  • shipyards park whitehorse (map)

As a part of APTN’s Indigenous Day Live Celebration and in partnership with the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre, please join us in celebrating Indigenous People’s Day weekend with a mass Blanket Exercise. Co-Founders Aurora Hardy and Teagyn Vallevand of Youth For Lateral Kindness will be leading this exercise.

In this interactive workshop, participants will have the unique opportunity to walk in our moccasins, through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization, and resistance. We will be laying blankets out across Shipyards Park to represent the land before it became Canada, while participants will represent the indigenous people in a visual representation as we lead them through our shared-history. This exercise is designed to broaden your understanding of the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the land now known as Canada.

Most importantly, this workshop will help you understand the resilience of Indigenous Peoples. It will also help you understand more about the traditional territory you live on and it’s peoples history, and how this history directly impacts indigenous peoples today.

This workshop is free to the public. Due to some mature content it is recommended for ages 11+
